Diagnostic characters for diploid and tetraploid species of green toads

In our new research, morphology of diploid (Bufotes sitibundus and B. perrini) and a tetraploid (B. pewzowi) species, as well as triploid hybrids (B. perrini x B. pewzowi) distributed in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan was examined. The most important for discrimination indices related to foot length, forearm length and eye diameter were identified using multivariate statistics. The application of these diagnostic indices will allow non-invasive identification of individuals of these diploid and tetraploid species during field research and study of museum specimens.

Rapid adaptive radiation in a hillstream cyprinid fish in the East African White Nile River basin

Our work have appeared in a new issue of Molecular Ecology. With the use of ddRAD-seq genotyping we have studied adaptive radiation of six ecomorphs of cyprinid hill-stream fishes of the genus Garra in a river located in the Ethiopian Highlands in East Africa. Here we highlight how, driven by ecological opportunity, an ancestral trophically highly specialized lineage is likely to have rapidly radiated in a riverine environment promoted by the evolution of novel feeding strategies.

Distribution of Gloydius halys in the Novosibirsk region is much wider than previously thought

Our short report on discovery of new marginal populations of the Halys Pit Viper (Gloydius halys) was published. These findings extend the known range of the species approximately 100 km to the west.

Phylogenetic position of Caligus lacustris (Copepoda: Caligidae) is clarified

With our colleagues from Petrozavodsk and Novosibirsk we made the first phylogenetic analysis of the parasitic copepod Caligus lacustris Steenstrup et Lütken, 1861, the only freshwater species of the genus. Its phylogenetic position implies that specialization to freshwater habitats had happened once in a group of species that included the predecessors to C. centrodonti, C. curtus, C. brevipedis, and C. lacustris itself. See the paper below for the details.

Microbial community structure in a host–parasite system

Our collaborative work with Mikhail Solovyev’s Lab on skin microbiota of Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) infested by Argulus and Lernaea ectoparasites is published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology. We found that ectoparasites have the potential to alter skin microbiota, which in turn can play a possible role in the transmission of secondary bacterial infections caused by pathogenic bacteria in fish.
